CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTS

Civil Engineering
Canyon Coal Colliery Extension, Delmas
ICON was awarded a contract in October 2019 to do the groundwork, stormwater and civil infrastructure for Canyon Coal. The project was for the opencast Phalanndwa Colliery extension near Delmas, in preparation for the mine’s increased production output. The R2,5million project was completed on time in February 2020, despite heavy rainfall on site. While the rain did not delay the workload, it forced Icon to implement creative measures to ensure that runoff water coming in from the surrounding fields and stockpiles did not enter Icon’s excavation or erode the pipes.

Civil Engineering
Helderfontein Outfall Sewer, Johannesburg North
ICON was contracted in July 2019 by Century Property Developers to carry out the development of the Helderfontein Outfall Sewer, situated in Riverside close to Fourways. The project was completed on schedule in February 2020, and the project has been handed over to Joburg Water. This pipeline has become the main line for the area and forms part of the main infrastructure allowing Century Property to start the development of Phase 2 of the Helderfontein upmarket housing estate on the Northern side of the Jukskei River.

Industrial development, Sunderland Ridge Ext 23, Centurion
In July 2019, ICON was awarded this project in Centurion for developers, Falcon Forest trading in association with API Property Group. This was a greenfield industrial development project aiming to accommodate warehousing and factory premises. ICON completed the construction of all infrastructure including roads; storm water pipes and structures; municipal water and sewer; as well as electrical and street lighting. The contract also included a large amount of crushing for layer works and fills. ICON’s scope of the R20million project was completed on time in mid-December 2019.
BULK EARTHWORKS PROJECTS

Bulk Earthworks
One on Whiteley, Johannesburg North
ICON was awarded a contract from the Amdec Group for the basement excavation and lateral support work on a R25 million mixed-use development. Aiming to provide commercial, retail, hotel and residential space in the heart of Melrose Arch Precinct, ICON’s work on the One on Whiteley project was successfully completed on schedule within four months. Completed in January 2020, the development now offers urban living ideal for young professionals, first-time buyers, frequent business travellers and property investors.

N1 Business Park, Midrand
With a project scope of four months, ICON successfully completed work on real estate investment company, Improvon’s industrial park development in Midrand, Gauteng. With a total project value of R10 million, ICON was contracted to construct platform and internal roads, do the layer works, as well as cut-to-fill the 120 000 m3 space.

Union Park, Johannesburg South
ICON was awarded a substantial project by Fortress REIT, a professional property development investment company specialising in logistics-focused properties, retail, industrial and office parks. The scope of work for the Union Park project – valued at R25 million – included bulk earthworks, demolition, and the construction of roads and services. ICON’s work on the new industrial park, located in Alberton, was completed in five months.

S&J
Earthworks and civils contractor, ICON Group, has recently completed their scope of work on a section of the S&J Industrial Estate in Johannesburg’s East Rand. The property has been in development for several years and will offer project opportunities for several more years to come.

M2 Filling station
The M2 Filling station contract was awarded to the ICON Group by the Property Developers, starting February 2020 for completion within six months. With a prominent history of delivering on time and within budget, the ICON Group overcame fierce competition for this contract which includes the initial bulk earthworks and civils, followed later by tar surfacing and layer works once building has progressed. Additionally, this new development includes the construction of two large entrance and exit roads onto the M2.

Residential project
Showcasing its dynamic ability to add value to any property development, the ICON Group completed the groundwork for a residential project in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. Making use of its world-class fleet of equipment, the company is adding to the sustainability, efficiency, and quality of the project.
DEMOLITION PROJECTS

Demolition
Melrose Arch Extension, Johannesburg North
ICON was awarded a R2,5 million demolition contract by Amdec Property Developments at the end of November 2019, for completion in March 2020. The contract included the demolition and removal from site of four multi-story apartment blocks situated in the densely populated area of Corlett Drive, Johannesburg. ICON was the principle contractor for the demolition, safety and community management for the project.

Growthpoint Business Park, Midrand
ICON was contracted to do the bulk earthworks and demolition for a new industrial building by Growthpoint Properties for Avroy Shlain. Located in Midrand, the R4 million project was completed in three months.

Main Straight Office Park, Johannesburg North
Icon was awarded a contract by Enigma property group do undertake the bulk earthworks and demolition for a new office park development, Main Straight Office Park in Bryanston, Johannesburg. Valued at R8 million, ICON’s scope of work on the 11 000 m² project was completed in 4 months.

85 Anderson
ICON was awarded a R20-million subcontract for demolition and 15 m excavation from GVK-Siya Zama Building Contractors, with work commencing in October 2020. The land, owned by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, was developed for the eventual use as the new Johannesburg Title Deeds Office at 85 Anderson Street. The project was interesting in that it required ICON to work around a 120-year old heritage building which would be integrated into the new structure. In addition, the excavation unearthed many unexpected materials, which ICON handled without issue.

Jaguar showroom in Bryanston, Johannesburg
The ICON Group overcame tough competition earlier this year, to be awarded the contract for demolitions and earthworks for the Jaguar showroom in Bryanston, Johannesburg. The company’s scope of work is now nearing completion, set to be handed over before the close of business and industry this year.
